I have a 2001 Jetta auto. my fuel mileage had dropped to average 32-34 a gallon have 205000 on car all stock does anyone have any ideas where to start

FuelEconomy.gov says it's 29 city 40 highway 33 combined. But I take it you've noticed a drop.

That same website has the manual trans mpg in error, so don't believe it.

Clogged intake/EGR is where I would start, assuming you are getting no error codes. Check with VCDS or a scanner to see if you are getting anything.

My old 2000 auto typically returned 42-44 in the summer and 34-36 in the winter. If you've noticed a drop the follow the "tips" thread in Bob's post.

I had VCDS hooked up in my 2003 Jetta TDI and I found one of the big differences when you are in town: in Drive at a stop sign the engine want 10mg per stroke, put it in neutral and it drops to 5 mg/stroke.
