Trailer harness wiring

Is my 2012 VW golf 2 or 3 wire? The tail and brake light comes through the same wire I checked with my circuit tester. I wired the controller as 2 wire. Blinkers work, Running lights work, But I do not have brake lights working on trailer. But I get power through plug. Just want to make sure I did it correctly.

3 wire, controlled through canbus. You need a separate power supply for the converter as well. If you don't have a separate supply I am surprised if you don't get a bulb error . I suspect you could also risk damage to the Body Control Module, which could take out the rear lights or turn signals.

You can get a 3 to 2 wire adapter that doesn't require separate power to make it work if you buy the right one.


I had one on my 2013 Jetta for my golf car trailer. Worked great.
