All the talk of hybrid gassers, why not a hybrid diesel?

It seems like if they can make a hybrid which is essentially a gasoline generator that charges the batteries on a car with an electric motor, they could just as well make it a diesel generator. That way instead of having gas hybrids that get 50MPG and diesel cars that get 50MPG, maybe we get a diesel hybrid that gets 80MPG.

This seems to make a ridiculous amount of sense, since the people who like saving money by using alternative fuels would generally just as well get a car with two kinds, and selling 80MPG is easier than selling 50. So why doesn't anyone build such a thing?

High sulphur diesel fuel. The thermal efficiency of the diesel engine makes it a natural (with Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel).

True, but they have the good stuff in Europe and they don't have any there that I know of. And they could just as well use an engine like the Volkswagen TDI that can run on the crap we have here, it doesn't have to be very high output since it's running constantly -- that's where the efficiency comes from. You aren't losing energy when the car is idling.
