On my 2003 Jetta TDI the fuel gauge varies about a 1/16 of a tank while driving around town. Does the fuel sender need replaced/cleaned or is this normal behavior?

Thanks!

Since new, my fuel gauge has a tendency to drop one or two hash marks. I think it is something in the cluster because the sender was changed along with the in-tank pump. I know the OP has a different setup than my BEW. I tried changing the ground connection at the sender itself, but that did not help.

If you don't already know there is an arrow on the edge of the hole the sender goes down into and an arrow on the top of the sender unit as well. My two arrows were not lined up when I pulled the sender to remove the triangle shaped check valve. As far as I know, I am the only person to ever get into the tank even though I am the third owner of this Jetta.

My arrows on the fuel tank sender were not lined up, thx! They were off by about 5 degrees. I fixed that and now the fuel gauge is behaving much better. :)
