1996 1Z TDI Tach Wire Doesn\'t Operate Mk1 GTI Tach
For future reference on any TDI into Mk1 swap:
The 1996 1Z TDI tach wire (out of the ECU) will not operate a 83/84 GTI tach. When I tried it, there was no response at all from the GTI tach. I ended up soldering in some different resistors and a new trimpot onto the 83/84 tach circuit board and using the "W" alternator terminal to operate the tach for my Mk1 TDI.
Dakota Digital (www.dakotadigital.com) also has a signal modifier for about $65 that is supposed to take the "W" terminal signal and make it useable for a tachometer. I haven't used it though as $5 in resistors appears to work fine.
