So two thing that pop up at me are:

1 does the mpg improve going from 5w40 to 0w30

2. are wear metals better, same, worse with the new brew?

It doesn't really say (that I saw) - Are they keeping the VW 507.0 approved one, the Mobil 1 ESP 5W30? It says the new one is replacing the 5W40 and the 0W30 ESP variants.

Have Fun!

Who knows? It is not VW approved and until people post UOI results so we can compare I will keep using Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 and that blend is proven to work just fine. Why rock the boat?

It is interesting to note what I've read on the bottles of Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel Oil, 5w40, It is is a 229.51 mb and bmw endorsed for those cars with DPF. I wonder if this would work as a replacement for those who use the now disconitinued mobil oil? Here is a photo from the back of this oil:

The Mobil One website said the ESP X1 0w/30 is the proper Mobil One oil for a 2014 Passat TDI - what does VW say? I've always liked Mobil One over the years. Previous hybrids required 0w/20 oils.

An easy one is M1 knows!! They are just not telling/stating the specifics. So the issue is now it has to be done anecdotally to gather market data, by way of UOA's, which VERY VERY VERY few folks do. We also know how vilified anecdotal data can be and how much debate that generates.

While it is not listed on the signature, I also have the 14 MB GLK 250 BT, aka MB 229.51, 229.52. i.e.. Formula M 5w40, now M! ESP X1 0w30

So I (anecdotally) would have no issue/s using any of these ESP's in any of my VW 507.00 specification machines. (I use Mobil Delvac 5w40 and/or M1 TDT 5w40 in the 2003 Jetta TDI going on 187,000 miles and would not switch to an ESP) ESP 5w40 formula M (discontinued) , ESP 5w30 (VW 507.00) or the NEW M1 X1 0w30. It's all good.

Looks like the HTHS value on this newer oil is actually lower than the ESP 5W-30.
Technically it is 0.08 cP lower. [about 2%]. This new oil would have to be VERY shear stable to meet the specifications it does with a starting HTHS of 3.5 cP.

Hmmm no VW 505.00/ACEA A3/B4 on the X1 replacement. :(
To be fair, the two oils (ESP Formula M 5w40 and non-X1 ESP 0w30) this new one replaces don't have old VW or old ACEA performance specs either.

Well this sucks. Been using ESP Formula M 5w40 since I switched at 100K on my car ('04 Jetta). Now at 265K and cam and lifters are pristine. Guess I'll try Mobil 1 TDT as most folks seem to have pretty good wear numbers with this oil. I've always liked Motul Specific 505 01 since I had the car but it got to hard to find and too expensive. Any adverse thoughts to going with TDT?

None at all. TDT has a good track-record. Also, you might find Valvoline MST 5w40 that is 505.01 in stores.

Yup, add msg # 11 to M1 TDT 5w40 and/or Mobil Delvac 1 5w40. Like yours the cam and innards are pristine. I run 30,000 miles OCI's.

Just a PSA for those who are using this oil.

http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil_1_ESP_Formula_M_5W-40.aspx

From the Mobil website:

Discontinued - Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 is being replaced by Mobil 1™ ESP X1 0W-30.
With this development would it be safe to assume that I would get nods of agreement and approval that it would be a prudent course of action to utilize Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 which is on the VW approved list for 504 00/ 507 00 oils for my brand new 2015 Golf TDI SE with 6 speed manual transmission when it rolls up on it's 10,000 mile oil change and that looking for a batch on sale and storing it in my garage would not be a bad idea?

Yes- use VW507 for your 2015 tdi. No need to stockpile. They haven't changed that oil, only the 5W40 version that was designed for MB diesels with DPF.

What is the main reason(s) that Mobil 1™ ESP X1 0W-30 is not a VW 507 oil?
By reading its tech specs in terms of viscosity and HTHS it is so close to Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 (I have not be able to find the TBN for the 5W-30 oil at this point).

Bummer, i really liked the formula m for my 2011 common rail! I guess the 507 esp 5w-30 is my next oil. I wonder if those who have removed the dpf continue to use the low SAPS oils, or go to the more available and cheaper cj4 5w 40 diesel oils. Also if there are other good 5w 40 options that meet mb 229.51. I have heard good things about pennzoil ultra euro 5w 40, but dont think it is low SAPS.

I googled 5w-40 mb 229.51 oils and found a pretty extensive listing. Apparently the majority of 229.51 oils are 5w-30. But also dozens of 5w-40, 0w-40, and 0w-30 oils listed. I am now very interested in mobil 1 esp 0w-40 if i can find it. Valvoline synpower mst 5w-40 looks interesting, but at $9/quart it is a bit pricey. If i stock up on the formula M, will it degrade over a period of say 5 years?

If you keep it sealed and in more-or-less climate controlled conditions (indoors), it'll be fine.

What is the consensus on Delvac-1 5W-40 ESP for a VW CR engine?

http://www.mobil.us/usa-english-lcw...ucts_engine-oils_mobil-delvac-1-esp-5w40.aspx

I'm thinking about using this oil after my engine warranty expires. I know it doesn't carry any VW specs but I think that point is academic. If this oil can handle modern EGR/DPF/DOC/DEF emission systems in the big rigs then it should be able to be safe to use in anything VW makes.

Bob, the oil king will chime in, but if I'm not mistaken, the Ash level is too high - the specs in the link you posted show it at 1.0, and 507.00 need less than that. For instance, the 5w40 ESP that's being cancelled is at .6 %.

It would be fine if you were using your car off road on your own personal property, but the higher ash level *could* cause DPF issues
