Diesel vs Gas

WSJ article today 'oil refiners after the pipe dream' about the crack spread of a barrel of crude into gasoline and distillate.

At 3.99 for diesel and 3.50 for gas, and assuming the diesel only gets 40mpg, the gas break even car has to get better than 35mpg to have cheaper fuel costs.
(so we are all likely still ahead)

70-80 cent differences are found in some places. Diesel is high in my area and has been for quite a while.

Did they factor in the added benefit of higher resale value on a diesel? Not to mention the "fun to drive" added bonus that the added torque of the diesel gives you.

Hopefully this spread is temporary.

Here's a warm fuzzy thought: Once gas and diesel get in the 5-6 buck range, a dollar spread becomes lower in percentage terms, so the diesel preserves it's advantage...
