Kp39 confusion

I have been recently been having issues with my stock turbo (239,000) miles and believe that the seals are torn as i notice oil consumption is up, soot under full throttle is way more than normal and although i do not have a boost gauge currently, it appears to be, that after i surpass a certain number of psi my turbo will no longer spool and is incredibly slow. My question is would anybody know if a kp39 from a 2008 bmw x5 would work? I found one

On the TDI, the exhaust manifold is part of the turbo. You can't separate them.

So, that KP-39 from a BMW x5 would certainly not be a direct bolt in replacement.

It might be possible to take both turbos apart and swap the guts from the good one into the worn out one, but let's just say you'd probably be the first. You'll become the world's expert on doing that specific swap.

For another $59 you could buy this https://www.ebay.com/itm/VW-Jetta-G...255005?hash=item3d4ea2281d:g:Dx0AAOxyQ45RBGXi

You could take your old one apart and swap in that cartridge, so at least it would be new, instead of taking the BMW one apart and swapping in the used cartridge.

@mike_04GolfTDI are the seals for the turbo located inside of this cartridge? I just want to make sure i would be buying the right part so i am not losing oil and am able to build psi again,
Thank you for the help!

Maybe try some engine flush. My old turbo was puking oil; when I took it apart it was just crud built up by the seals which are just basically just baby piston rings. No rubber crap or O-rings in there. A round or two of some crud cutter probably would have cleaned it out.

Yes, the cartridge contains the bearings and seals for the turbine, so replacing that should fix any oil leaking problems you may have. Keep in mind, if it's on eBay, it’s likely something from China like this https://www.alibaba.com/product-det...9-54399880006-54399880017_1326416365.html?s=p

This video shows how to put the cartridge in a nearly identical turbo https://youtu.be/3CVIrfK2Z7I

The main (maybe only) difference is the European version doesn’t have the electrical connector for the smart actuator. It just has a vacuum pot. (This does not matter as you are not replacing that part).

As with any cheap part like this it might work or it might blow up after five minutes. Best of luck.
