W8 gas tank on PASSAT TDI?

I am considering installing the larger gas tank used on the W8 to extend my cruising range. Has anyone made this modification? If so, how difficult was it and what are the associated costs? Thanks.

Gone...
I currently get 1100-1150 km cruising range on my Passat (about 700 miles) but I certainly would like the same cruising range of the old B4 Passat Variants...

What's the diff in capacity between the W8 and TDI tanks?

The W8 has a 21G tank as compared to our 16G.
I certainly wouldn't mind another 200 miles per tank.

Eric (SVTWEB) put one on his V6 4mo conversion... As long as we have a 4mo pan I thing it would work otherwise

Does the W8 tank fit? I thought there was something different about the W8 wheel well because of it. I could be thinking of 4motion instead.

You can see his in this thread -> Linky

He put it in a V6 4mo B5... You'd have to check with whoever might know if it will fit elsewhere.

Clarification here.

I have not at this time installed a W8 rear tank into my car.

A few facts on the W8 tank.

1) It will only work on 4-motion cars.
2) the trunk floor-pan where the spare tire goes must be replaced.
3) The tank is really nothing more that an add-on to the stock tank, although the stock tank must be replaced with a W8 unit that has the additional hose fitting for the add-on tank.
4) there is an additional electrical unit that has to be wired in for the fuel level and transfer pump to work.
5) cost of all the parts less labor would be in the $2000 range.

So what I'm hearing here is that it would be a lot easier and cheaper to just carry a 5 gallon jerry can in the trunk...

Or, since we have to stop for a wee more often than we need to refill this things, it's all a moot point anyway.
That's what I liked about my old 78 Toyota pickup. The time it took to empty the tank was about equal to the time it took to fill my bladder
