Caliper slide pin missing a dust boot?

Doing the front brakes on my '04 TDI Jetta wagon, and I noticed that both the old and new calipers don't have dust boots where the calipers slide on the pins. Doesn't make sense to me, as the pins will gum up from exposure to brake dust and dirt. Am I missing a boot or is this how they're designed???

I bought my 2001 Jetta used and the dust boots were gone on both the front and rear, and the rusted up and got sticky. It is very likely your caliper pins need boots, so I suggest you find out for sure about yours.

The guide pin bushing is the dust boot.

It looks like your guide pin bushing is separated, so time for new guide pin bushings.
