shifting problems in cold weather

2001 Beetle won't shift into 4th gear when outside temp is in the 40s or below. When weather warms up shifts with no problem, any suggestions would be helpful.

Have you check the fluid level in the transmission? When was it changed last?

I am going to assume it's the 01M autofail tranny?
Fluid/filter change and fluid level is crucial. Other than that, do some searching on the issues w/01M trannys. CoolAirVw in Kansas City is the resident tranny guru. Pay attention to anything Rich has posted on those units. He has written many posts about "fixes" for them.
