Anybody knows what the purpose of the oil pan cover is?
Also, will it cracked if used to support the engine from below
?

There is also some insulation in it, I'm wondering if it is to speed up engine warm up time.

Signature.
It’s a thin trim piece for aerodynamics. Do not use it to support the engine. The insulation is for road noise.

Recommend replacing it with a real skid plate, either aftermarket or OEM from the Alltrack’s parts bin.

The oil pan shroud is a sound dampener. The molded foam inside it also serves as a very effective sponge that soaks up a ton of oil if you don't remove the shroud before draining the oil pan (if draining the pan via the drain plug rather than from above) :D. Don't support the engine with the shroud.

Just for what it's worth, what kind of dummy would want to support/lift on an airmail paper thin aluminum oil pan under the engine ???

That's a common practice on Mk4 timing belt jobs to raise/lower the engine to get at a few different bolts: put a jack on the corner of the oil pan and up/down from there.

It sounds like that is exactly what it is.
Now, do you actually really remove it before draining the oil?

Its so quick and easy to do, its not worth degrading the foam with oil-contamination. But if you extract the oil from above or have a drain valve installed, you needn't touch the shroud.

do a search, the SX version can be made to adapt the pan.
