I have a vw beetle 2.0L tdi design 2012 dsg. It failed mot last Saturday on fog light. Partner took off fog light and tried another bulb but voltage or something was wrong and it blew straight away. Result is: everything working but no lights behind heater controls, no lights on dash to say that lights are on, and other dashboard lights not working. Checked fuses by steering wheel and under bonnet - all appear ok. But.......went out tonight to drive it down to garage for the morning and it is stuck in park, won’t start , fan comes on as soon as you turn the key and in the top right of the dial there is a flashing spanner and ‘P’ . Have tried handheld machine, no fault codes on engine transmission or central electrics. What the hell have we done! Could we have replaced a fuse in the wrong place?

Fuses should be checked by a multimeter not visually checked. Sounds like you have a short somewhere. Have you done other work recently?

Did you leave the blown replacement bulb in the fog light? If yes, take it out, then see how the car reacts. Did you take a picture of the fuse block before you started? Sounds like the fuse is probably in the wrong spot, i would tow it to a dealer and have them check the fuses, before you end up with several in the wrong place.
