I pulled the trans out of my alh 01m parts car and I pulled it back a ways in order to get at the drive plate bolts, and, it leaked and even after I separated the TC bolts it stayed put when the transmission came off. Could I have done damage by separating this way? What is the correct way to do the removal so the TC stays put and all the fluid stays in??

Also, I'm looking for a side cover which has rotted. Are these available from a tranny shop?

Don't know about the side cover (junk yard?) but just put the TC back on.
The same thing happened to me when I pulled my engine.
There is a seal but you likely did it no harm. Just my .02. :)

There are just too many to list....
Just takes finesse, same as any other car with a torque converter like that. Studs are worse than bolts, because you cannot push the converter off the drive plate and spin it a bit to help work it off. But on the 01M just just push on the studs and wiggle and get it as far away as you can, and then take care to keep the trans square to the engine upon removal until those studs are clear.

Heaven knows I have R&R'd enough 01Ms over the years, LOL....

The only thing I can think of is making sure the TC drops in completely.
Only VW automatics I ever took out there back in the Type 3 & 411/412 days.
The American units drove the trans pump from the TC shaft and if it didn't drop into the pump you would tighten the bell housing bolt and crack the pump gears.
Oilhammer sounds more experienced if these are the same. :)
