2012 Jetta TDI - Sold back to VW Snif :(
I just read the following in another thread: this quote was excerpted from an actual letter from VW to an owner of a 2015 vehicle:

The warranty period for the “Extended Emissions Warranty” limited warranty extension shall be the greater of:
 11 years or 162,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s original in-service date; OR
 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the date and mileage of Phase 1 of the emissions modification.

I have a 2012 Jetta TDI that is eligible. I currently have 38K miles on it. Let's say I decide to get the fix and I have 40K miles at the time I get the fix.

Assuming I continue to put on an avg of 6500 miles/year, I would reach 162K miles over 18+ yrs or so (122K + 40K at time of fix), so in my case the 11 years occurs first.

If I calculate the # of miles from the modification, then the 5 yrs would come first since I put on so few miles.

Since the warranty is the greater of... am I correct in assuming that in my case, the "extended warranty" will be good for an additional 11 yrs of owning the car if I continue my current driving pattern?

Nope. You don't get an additional 11 years. You get 11 years total from the in service date. Or 5 years from the fix.

However I also think you're referencing the wrong warranty for a 2012. I believe the 11yr/162k applies to the new old sale 2015 cars. The older cars have a great warranty, but its a bit less in terms of years and mileage.

OK, I guess I'll have to find out exactly what the extended warranty on the 2012's is. Thanks!

Wow, 38k on a 2012... saw a 2013 on a lot the other day with just under 18k on it. Asking 15,700.

As I understand it, the 2015 warranty 5yr/60k part starts anew after the phase 2 work is done. Definitely a factor in your number crunching. 2015 warranty is much better as I see it.
