I've failed to see a change in my mileage since I started using ULSD, which my pump has had the sticker for quite a while (whether or not that's what I'm getting...I don't know). Actually, on a recent trip down to Madison I just set my new high mileage record: 58.1. With the colder weather finally coming in I expect my mileage to drop near 43 from my regular mileage of 46-47.
Let me know how the cardboard works out for you Jake. With your commute you'll be through 2 or 3 tanks in no time.

Maybe I should do an intake cleaning in the summertime, my TDI smokes like a freight train on demand. I also have sprints 520 in the TDI. I smoke out a Audi A4 convertible last summer who was tailgating me, it was a priceless moment.

Interesting. No visible smoke for me when my car was on the dyno at TDIfest in 2005.

I'm still pulling 40-42 mpg average in mixed highway/city driving, even with ULSD. I'll admit that I am not exacting about how much I fill the tank, and I drive so few miles that I fill up only every three weeks . But after filling up on ULSD for a few months now, my perception is that my mileage hasn't changed.

This year I did put on a winter front -- the OEM kit World Impex sells. Again, I'm just not up for rigorous scientific research, but based on temp gauge readings at various points in my commute (which is pretty much the same route daily), the car is warming up faster. I'm getting real heat (hot enough that I turn the heater dial towards blue; usually the temp dial is an on/off switch) by the end of the commute most days -- even through the recent temperature dip. Perhaps the biggest benefit (or the one that was most unexpected) was that the car recovers to operating temperature much faster after parking for a bit. All in all, I'm happy I put the winter front on.

Anybody notice Fleet Farm does not sell Artic Blend diesel anymore, now it's just blended. What ever that means. I filled up yesterday and notice the new wording their diesel pumps.

Deafbug is a great resource for the Minnesota TDI community! On Saturday, he helped me (well, he basically did everything- I held the light) install new rear rotors and pads. We also troubleshot my poor performace as of late- turned out to be a broken arm operator on the shudder-relief valve. Deafbug saved me $250 by macguyvering a repair to the plastic arm. That little fix has returned my car to it's old power curve (with the broken arm, my engine wimped out around 3000x).

Like Steve-O, I too have had my VW winter front on since late October. It really does make the car warm up faster (especially when the fan is on 0). The heat becomes too hot to keep the setting in red- so like Steve-O, I end up turning it down into the blue range. I mainly put it on because at my job I do a lot of short runs with extended stops- so I wanted to warm up my engine faster. But, as far as I can tell, the air intake is completely covered up when it's installed (up and to the left of the drivers headlight). We changed out my air filter and snowscreen and I noticed some seeds/debris in the snowscreen (no surprise) but there was quite a bit of large grass stems/seeds/debris that made it into my air filter. I was worried about whether the demand for air was met by opening the "trap door" in the snowscreen. I don't know how large blades of grass could have made it into my airfilter without coming through the trap door- so I took the top two parts of my winter front off (the 3rd piece is still installed on the bottom grill). I think I'll go with the water heater pipe insulation that others have installed in their grills.

Anyway, just wanted to let everyone know about Deafbug's great work. He doesn't do every repair but every repair he does well.

We get together infrequently, I can think of two GTG (get togethers) at New Guys place in the 5 years I've had my wagon. But go ahead and ask away. People are willing to stop by and help you with Vag Com'ng your VW.

Now as for seeing if my Powerstroke gets better mileage than your Cummins.....:)

Still looking into getting the next VW diesel , last was a 85 jetta , looking to get as new as I can but may stay away from electronics & auto , oh ya & stay away from eco D , since I have got the next one yet , there may be changes to the plan .

My Cummins , about 15 mpg towing , about 21 mixed driving , when I get done I may see 24 - 25 , a friend has got 27 , but I do not plan to a propane .

21 beats me, I'm thinking 18 on a good day. Now on the TDI, I ran to Cleveland after Viking Rob threw down the guantlet and got 52 or so on one tank headed eastbout at 70 MPH. Around 850 on a tank. I've had some tweaks though.

So back to your issue, get the best wagon that you can afford, the '02 is the first year of the wagon, I've had good luck with mine, but the '03 allows you to get the ESR electronic stability regulation which is a good thing. Now you want simpliciity you are probably wanting to go mid 90's Passat. 110k Miles on mine and no major problems. Did you have any questions?

Deafbug came up again today to do the oil change and check my "lifter noise" We think we have solved the problem and I will follow up mid week.

He has found a deal on oil and more importantly the correct oil. Buys it by the case. I think we may have to tie him down to get it out of him at the next GTG.

by the way. When is the next GTG? All I can say is my shop is availible to the TDI club but Im thinkin we need to include some chics to bring food etc. Last time you guys were great but the food? eh? not up to paar. Heat for chics, beer and food is my deal. lol.....

I tell ya if anyone needs a great TDI guru here in MN its Deafbug.

Mobil 1 Turbodiesel Truck has been my oil the last two changes. $29 a case of 6/quart on sale at Fleet Farm. My oil extractor wasn't happy and the engine cooled off fast in this cold. But I was planning on dropping the skid plate and pulling the oil plug anyways.

As for Brad, I'd trust him for anything on my TDI. Great asset indeed here locally. As far as a GTG, check out the KC/Omaha thread in the subforum. A number of us might end up down in KC in a few months. Six hour drive is a breeze down I35. I still have some lonely injectors waiting to up my power and smoke to be installed.

It's only going to be in minus single digit's so you should be ok. Now at -30, they don't like to start. I looked at the terminal parking page and they say Jump Starts and Towing

In case of an automobile problem, call Mark's Towing at 651-454-1533.

I think the fuel you're talking about is Koch's Arctic Gold, which now appears to be renamed Arctic. I didn't realize Mills Fleet Farm no longer sold it; it hasn't been sold for a couple of years at the Pro Stop in St. Paul, where I fill up in winter. Apparently that is because Koch no longer offers it in Minnesota, what with the biodiesel blend mandate here. :( It's specially-refined, not merely D2 with additives.

The stuff Pro Stop offers is delivered from Kath (don't know where they get it) and it's blended with D1. Standard winter stuff. The "Premium" winter diesel is the same stuff doctored with PowerService before it gets to the fuel station (this according to a guy from Kath with whom I spoke on the phone). I've been buying the regular stuff since it seems to move much faster than the Premium. I have never had a problem with it in the 2 or 3 years they've offered it, though since the station went to ULSD I've been double-dosing the PowerService on my own. Maybe MFF is using the same fuel/supplier.

-15 here this morning. started on the second attempt (15 seconds crank time each and 25 seconds GP). I'm using SA fuel (I figure they get plenty of trafic). I know what you mean I really didn't want to start this morning.

Anyone notice trends for which stations carry winter addititives on the shelf up in the twin cities loop?
I had to get fuel at 5:30am on the way to work and my single dose bottles in my trunk were empty. I don't know it it was all the fuel but I needed to use my emergency boost jumper cables to start yesterday, might just be the OEM battery losing some spunk. Winterized fuel and an extra dose and I've yet to not start on the first long crank. But yeah, today I'm refilling both of my little additive bottles with my stanadyne (jug gelled solid in garage) and LDL (thanks again Mike).

It was the Passat (1.8) that was hard starting for us. 2 cycles on the GPs and the wagon started right up! (I'm not convinced that cycling the GPs twice does anything, but worth the extra 15 seconds anyway)

I am still using the fuel from Holiday (formerly Tracy 1 stop) Old habits die hard!

Well the 1.8ts are very finicky engines at times two things that are very commen is bad temnpo sensors. and spark plugs you have to run the exact plug in the car and they need to be changed every 40k or the car has a hard time starting. hope this helps!

GTG- social

Here in MN we have had a mechanical GTG, maybe we should have a social GTG with the better halfs? Nothing too crazy. Happy to host at our place again in an attempt to save dough. Could go out to a smoke free pub but prices get pretty high.

Thoughts?

2002 Beetle Axle "severely" out of place

While getting new tires and an allignment a few weeks ago, I was told that my axle was "severely" out of place, and I would A) need a new or used axle put on, or B) find a specialist who could straighten my current axle.
I have no idea how it got like this. I purhchased it used back in August with a clean CarFax from a VW Dealership. The auto place who did my tire replacement, and the place where I got a second opinion both said that there appears to be no sign of a serious accident, but they couldn't explain what else would cause this problem.
Anyway... Does anyone have any recomendations as to where I can bring my Beetle to get it fixed?

Thanks!

Yeah - Deafbug will be helping me out with a timing belt in the near future, so if he has some advice about it I can get it then.

While my wife thinks spending $$$ on the TDI as a hobby is much more tangible than playing paintball or spending time blowing people up online in games, she is not the type to rub elbows with us diesel heads.

But I'd certainly be up for it and am plenty comfortable in the kitchen to cook or lend a hand.

I think over the last 8 years my wife has set foot in my shop only a half a dozen times. Im not going to loose another 8 years. Time to include her or my shop becomes a greenhouse and quiltshop.

Plus she might pose for the TDI calander. You wanna see a calander with a bunch of Diesel Geeks? or some hot TDI chics?
