Something I have pondered every time I see a dirty tailpipe and bumper from a newer GTDI equipped vehicle and compare it my late model TDI.

TUV Nord Testing Firm: Direct Injected Gasoline Engines Emit More Particulates Than Diesels

Engine Technology International March 2014 article

SwRI: Particle Emissions from Direct Injection Gasoline EnginesI

Testing performed by engineers at TÜV Nord on behalf of Transport & Environment (T&E) on three mainstream C-segment hatchbacks showed that GDI engines fitted without gasoline particulate filters (GPFs) produce 10 times more particles than modern diesel engines fitted with DPFs

Don't go giving the EPA any ideas. I don't really want GPFs to be mandated.

Don't worry EPA hates both gas and diesel, just hate diesel more, and will only be happy when we're all walking, riding bicycles, or driving electrics or maybe hybrids.

2002 TDI (ALH) with 513,000 km. First Owner and very happy... No Problems, never left us stranded on the Highway. Average useage is about between under 4 ltr. and 5 ltr. Normal longdistance travel: 4.1/100

New business idea: new crap load of coal fired electric plants in Mexico. Sell the clean electricity to California for electric cars. We already have a similar setup with China for other goods like batteries. We get clean goods and energy while they pollute environment without EPA getting involved.

What's particularly conspiracy theory about this is that this was known, yet they went ahead and didn't mandate LEV III particulate limits that the GDI engines couldn't meet w/o a GPF. But they had no problem hindering diesel mpg before to meet particle limit. Total favoritism IMO, raises questions in my mind why GDI was given such a huge pass given how much more quality information was known ahead of time.

Its called Politics, probably more money to be made on Gas consumption than diesel.

SDG&E tried that idea. PUC would not approve the long term contracts to just export the pollution across the border where the wind could blow it back north. Not coal fired plants, but oil or gas fired plants.

So far, nobody has suggested building a nuke plant in Baja. That might not be a bad idea...

Black Carbon Emissions in Gasoline Exhaust

An Environment Canada report was just published in Environmental Science and Technology showing astonishingly high black carbon (BC) emissions in off-cycle conditions (cold start in cold ambient conditions in this case), not only for GDI but also for PFI (PFI actually higher in this case)...
