TDI Exhaust Modification Question

I have a 98' New Beetle TDI with close to 300,000km on it. It's running very well and I haven't had any problems with it. The engine is completely stock.
I am looking to modify the exhaust to bring out the sounds of the engine more.
In other words, I want to make it nice and loud.

Can somebody suggest what I might do to produce the best result?
I want the car to be louder, but I also want the sound to be crisp.
Is there something I can do to make the sound of the turbo more pronounced?

Is there any downside to modifying the stock exhaust system? Thanks!

Chop the muffler and put some pipe in its place. $20, 20 minutes...done.

Search mufflerectomy here and on Youtube.

what about a straight 3" or is that too big??? how loud is a straight pipe on these tdi's??
3" is what I would do - probably not much gains over 2.5" on a moderately modified car, but no point in doing it twice :)

The larger you go, the louder a straight pipe is. In stock exhaust size, a straight pipe is tolerable for day to day use. Some have minor drones depending on what you do for an exhaust tip, but it's really pretty decent sound wise and there's a nice turbo whistle.

Click on the link in my signature to hear a 4" straight pipe. Some YouTube searches will yield more videos of others TDI exhaust setups.

i kinda like the soot. beside i wash my car like every other day, i just kinda ignored it. my backside was sooty with the moffler on too. i htink it has something to do with how the air flows around the golf. and like you said it is white =)

Check out the Euro Jet 3 inch thread by Far. I just installed that system and love it. Euro Jet sales staff blows but the products are good. Nothin like straight pipe diesel...
