hi board,

as I understand that a special blened oil is used inside my 2005 Jetta TDI. as I was reading the manual, the 2nd service after the 5k service is at 10k, which has an interval of 5k not the usual 10k interval.

so my question is should 505.01 full sythetic oil be used in 5k-10k? or I should use the special blended break in oil?

Thanks,

AFAIK, break-in oil comes with the factory fill. It is intended to stay in for the first 5K miles only. After that, switch to a 10K fill interval using the 505.01. Check out posts by dieseldorf for much info about where to find it.

Don't forget to follow DBW's break-in tips: search posts by Drivebywire.

I personally don't believe in leaving factory fill longer than 1,000 miles. I drained it and added 5w-40 505.01 Castrol shortly thereafter. Afterwards, I did 5k OCI and now am 9,200 miles onto my first 10,000 mile OCI. Oil added during the 9,200 miles has been 6 oz.

Changing out oil at 1,000 miles negates the benefits of using specialized viscosites to hone and polish the modern finishing of these engines.

In the old days when cylinder honiing was done by hand I would agree change the oil at 500-1000 miles but we are not.

In the old days we used straight weight oils and changed it every 1,000 miles...but this is not the old days its 2005 therefore:

No wear metals that I am aware of have ever been found in the engine oil filter after the first oil change meaning they are all smaller than 7-15 microns. Even new engine oil analysis shows wear metals such as iron in the 75-100ppm range (That aint much), to put this in perspective a motor thats broken in is down at 30-40ppm range. These motors get an initial run in and flush at the factory before the motor is crated for shipment to the final assembly plant. This is where any of the larger metals get expelled.

VW knows what they are talking about be patient and leave the factory fill in the motor...

Regarding the fill afterwards use any of the 505.01 oils if you want to go to extended drains get the variable service fucntion activated and use the 506.01 oils.

6 oz of oil added in 9,200 miles of use...I think my polishing of internals was sufficiently completed by 1,000 miles.

Is that variable service function something that can be activated via the vag-com?
No, you need a sensor in the oil pan to use it.
