Hello Oilhammer,
I have been reading your posts for a few years now…I bought my 2006 Mk5 BRM Jetta new in 2006 and have done all maintenance. Notably:
DMF/Solid flywheel swap.
Swap gearbox after output shaft bearing cracked the case
Timing belt
I would like to state upfront that I would gladly pay a consulting fee for the opportunity to chat with you for a few minutes. You appear very knowledgeable and while I think I have this worked through and understand everything I value any advice you might have to offer.
THE STORY: the 2nd timing belt failed… a bit before expected (Gates) at 194k (OEM went the 100K looked fine when I changed it in 2011)
Sheared a bunch of teeth.
So, pistons are fine, valves look OK, though head is at a local machine shop to be checked out and replace any damaged/bent valves.
I an going to replace the cam, though the original has minimal wear (always used the 505.01 pure syn). The first lobe on #1 worn past the thin lobe edge chamfer. All other lobes have the chamfer, but seems foolish to try and reuse it.
My question is re: TDC when I reassemble the head, and put on the timing belt.
It appears that the crank lock (Metalnerd purple) can only lock one way. (gear bump in hole, 2 bolts, slide pin in block, arrow at 1:30. Rotating the gear 360 (full turn), pistons come back to the same positions: #1 & #4 up, #2 & #3 down. When locked, the crank is in the correct position for timing belt installation.. Correct?
The camshaft also can only lock in one position #1 TDC : Pulley is keyed, the gear only goes on one way where the lock pin goes through the gear, the pulley, and into the head, AND the hole in pulley is visible in the center of the crown shaped window in the gear face. This is also the correct position for the timing belt installation…Correct?
I guess I am a little OCD about the fact that the cam and crank got out of sync and I don’t want to screw up since I have come this far.
I can go to your website, or pay pal, or send you a check…It would be very much worth your fee to chat for about 5 or 10 minutes!
Thank you for your consideration!
Sincerely,
Jeff Nystrom
