Both my rear tail lights just suddenly decided not to turn on when i turn on the head lights on my MK4 golf. Any idea which fuse it would on the panel? Or could it be another problem someone here has come by before?

You need a brake switch. It's located underneath the brake pedal. There is a recall affecting Mk4s on this. Check with a local dealer or VW Canada. My brother's Mk4 Jetta just got a notice a couple of months ago.

99.5 used to at least...
If th enew switch doesn't work you could have a broken wire somewhere. PM me if you need the ghetto fix that I used/have been using for the last 2 years.

The stupid legend in the fuse panel compartment got me to print this out and keep a copy folded up in there. Those symbols mean diddly squat to me.

Now if something goes wrong with the electrical system at least I know which fuse I should check!

Funny I was about to post a new thread when I spotted this one. I'm also having an issue with mine. When the brakes are applied the right signal light also turns on along with the reverse lights which flash on and off. Kind of wacky. Tried playing around with the bulbs, replaced a few but the problem still exists. Any ideas?

Hey on my 2011 Jetta TDI - the back running lights/taillights are not working but everything else is fine --- don't want to get robbed by the dealer if it just a fuse or if anyone has ann idea about what the deal is -- Seems like this is a common problem anyone got a solution? THX

Check the fuse(s)?

Check this thread from vwvortex for fuse box location on 2011 Jetta TDI:

A: it is NOT a common problem

B: this thread is from 2007 (long before your NCS Jetta was even designed, let alone built)

C: OBD works, I would start there (unlike the OP's car, which had no such wizardry to assist in diagnosing).

D: you can quickly check ALL the fuses, even if you did not know if a specific one was for the circuit in question.

Ground issue maybe?

On a different car, some time ago, I had similar symptoms, turned out to be a bad ground at the rear light assembly..... maybe something to check
