I went my local Esso dealer & picked up a case of Mobil 1 Delvac ( $122 for 4 X 4 L). I started talking with the owner & he said that he was using Delvac before but he now has switched to Esso XD-3 Extra 0W40 which is a PAO base stock synthetic at $65 for 4X4L. Esso is a Canadian division of EXXON. Is this a CL4 oil like Delvac? Is Esso selling a product with the same technoligy as Delvac without the extra costs of the fancy Mobil 1 brand

Not sure if XD-3 is a full or synthetic blend? I will be calling the 1-800 technical support line next week with some questions.

At that price I'd imagine it's a blend of PAO (to improve the low temp properties) and some Group III basestock. The cost of PAO stocks is such that you won't find a 100% PAO based oil at that price point. The Petro Canada 0w-30 is produced with a PAO/Group III blend as well.

Both the 0w-30 and 0w-40 do look fine for the TDI ....
