Greetings. I am looking for help in identifying an 012 tranny missing the 3 letter code (at least according to yard that has it) - it allegedly is out of a grey market '98 passat diesel - perfect for my conversion (tdi - 914), if it is actually what they say it is. So there are two ways

1) Can anyone help me identify this number pulled from the tranny case:

0123 01 2 11 R

2) Can anyone tell me how to get it in to fifth gear out of the car so I can count input shaft rotation vs. output shaft rotation to check the gear ratio?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

Well that set up would be interesting. I owned a 1973 914 2.0 for 14 years. Fun car!

Do they know where the code is located on the top middle of the bell housing? Sometimes you have to take a wire brush to it.

If that doen't work out for you. I have a 012 DVZ from a V6 gasser I will sell cheap.

Thanks guys - is the code stamped in the case? The guy I spoke to seemed to think it might have been on a tag that fell off - but he could very easily be thinking about another tranny. If its stamped in, I'll take a wire brush to it on Sat and get to the bottom of the story - counting turns shouldn't be necessary.

On the 4 TDI gearboxes I have changed in the last year they have all been stamped on the top center of the bellhousing. Let us know what you find. I may can tell you the ratios it has on it.

BTW, how are you getting the engine cooled?

Thanks for the info - think ill be able to get enough radiator in the engine bay or over the tranny. If not, front trunk it is. I'll let you know how it turns out on Sat.

So I scooped up a DUK tranny - a little cleaning on the top revealed the code. Overall the tranny looks to be in great shape and my research indicates that it has a sweet set of ratios - can anyone confirm?

3.556 R&P, 3.5 1st, 1.944 2nd, 1.222 3rd, .875 4th, .686 5th.

If this is correct, it should match up pretty well with my light 914. Its a pretty tall gearset - should also get some pretty sweet gas mileage. My calcs indicate that I'll be turning 2500 rpm @ 74mph.

My FHN turns around 2350 @ 75mph the only difference is mine hasba 3.44 final drive. over a 35 mile cruise running 60-70 i was flirting with 48 mpg.

Btw, why a heavy diesel and not a rotary or S2000 motor?

I've always been intrigued by the TDI engine/diesels in general - performance with efficiency. And its a pretty uncommon conversion in a 914, like doing things different, especially in a car where just about every engine has been dropped into it.

That's true about engines. Well i can imagine how quick it will be as my manual passat with a stage 2 tune and a balance shaft delete is very quick even having to pull around 3500 #. Put it into a 2000# car and now you have the power and economy.

Keep us updated.
