Timing Belt - post-replacement troubleshooting

I just changed the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, idler, etc. in my '04 Jetta (BEW) myself. I followed the instructions exactly and everything went great. I had all the crank and cam locks, and I'm sure it did not get out of timing.

She fired off immediately and purrs like a kitten when it's idling. But, when I took her out for a test drive, it hesitates, lacks power and acts like it is missing. The MIL (check engine light) is also lit. Any suggestions?

I would pull the code and that will probably solve the mystery. Did you leave anything unplugged, like the MAF sensor, egr valve connector, throttle plate connector? Get all the boost hose connections tight? Vacuum hoses? Double check.

If you find someone with a VCDS scanner, also get a reading on the cam timing at idle with the engine warm. I think it is measuring block #4. It is the "tortional value" and is expressed in degrees KW. It should be near to zero.
