Removed the lifters to inspect for damage, how do they go back and how do you time them with the cam?

Thanks,
Dan

There are just too many to list....
I'm not sure exactly what you mean. The lifters just slide back in, and there is not any "timing" of them to the camshaft.

You should put them back in the same hole they come out of. The tops are what you should be inspecting .......... use a magnifying glass to see if there are "spider web" like cracks...... anything else should be very obvious.

There is no "timing" of the lifters. They just sit in the hole and are pushed down by the cam and back up by the springs under them (you should be able to see the valve springs with the lifters out.

I suspect he's asking how to time the cam.

At the top of this page is the Articles button. Click it then find the A4 timing belt change pdf.

Position the crank at or a little before TDC BEFORE installing the cam and install the cam with the #1 cam lobe UP. Then put on the belt following the timing instructions.

You should also allow about 45 minutes or so before turning the engine over with the new lifters/cam installed so the lifters will equalize and not cause the the valve to lower into the piston.
