2014 jake brake

I have a 2014 Jetta. Saturday while on a long drive I started hearing what reminded me of a "jake brake" kicking in every time I would let off the accelerator. As soon as I gave it any fuel it would go away.

I would rarely hear it when I had cruise control on unless going down a steep hill.

I thought maybe an exhaust leak or a stuck waste gate? I stopped and had a friend rev it up while I was on the ground listening but it wouldn't do it then and I couldn't detect or see a problem. I had no choice to but to continue driving the car.

Eventually, after a couple hundred miles it stopped happening. Now a few days later I heard it again a few times but not like before.

Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance

2014 Jetta, sounds like a jake brake when decelerating

I have about 50k miles on my TDI. About a week ago I started getting a sound when letting off the gas like a jake brake kicking in on a big rig sounds. It comes and goes but is getting more constant. I would have thought an exhaust leak if it were constant.. Any guesses, please share.

Your turbo has an actuator not a wastegate. The actuator could be sticking- though I don't know if that would cause the noise you're hearing. It almost sounds like it could be turbo surge to me. I'd try some Italian tune-ups.
