Can anyone get the fuel cap to sit on the fuel door while refueling as shown in the user manual? Mine always falls off.

I can't. Not in 4 years. I just let it hang and wipe away any fuel residue/drips I see when replacing. You don't want diesel on the paint.

I've managed to get it to balance there for one or two seconds, but then it falls off. It seems safer just to carefully let it rest backwards against the side of the car. The fuel cap rest on my wife's Corolla is the only thing about her car that I prefer to my Golf.

Success depends on which way the tether is twisted. I can get mine to stay ok.

I just let it hang. Diesel doesn't kill the paint like gasoline. I don't have any scratches either.

One thing to note, is that the plastic around the cap should rotate freely. I could see if it sticks, it might want to twist the cap off.
