What methods are used by VW to regulate refrigerant flow? More specifically, what type of compressor is used? The sales literature says that the Passats, NBs and wagons use a variable displacement compressor. The other models specs don't list the compressor configuration. I'm assuming that they use a CCOT (cylcing clutch orifice tube) configuration. Or a flow control valve arrangement with a constantly running compressor. I've tried for 2 days to do a search on this subject but I keep getting a "too busy" message. Does any body know? I don't have an '01 NB service manual yet.

While driving I feel the compressor click on and off while the a/c button its self remains on constantly. Therefore I assume you are right, it's a CCOT model.

Variable displacements are cool, and seem to work better for idling long periods on the interstate, a popular pass-time in Utah! But probably too pricey for a base model Golf :-(
