A new Cat fuel filter is about $14. How much is a gauge?
Princessauto over here sells them for really cheap. It's a really good diagnosing tool as well for any type of blockage.

If these filters last 100k miles, then I guess thats what I'll be using :D

Ummm, in what world?

It would be Mm (megameter) to equal 1000 km. A "K" is not an prefix I have ever seen, but what do I know with a degree in math....

I am at about 90,000 miles on mine. I am planning on changing it at our next GTG in March! I will take pics of it once I cut it open.

When Greg came up with the device he really helped the TDI's big time and it's one of the best or important mod you can do for your TDI.

60k miles (~100k km) has been a good interval for me.
He is correct. What he's saying is,

k is kilo = 1000
h is hecto = 100
d is deca = 10
m is metre = 1

So 60k miles = 60kilo miles = 60 000 miles

Thus, 100k km = 100kilo km = 100 000 km

Km is the abbreviation for Kilometre or Kilometer

100 Km is 100 Km is 100 Km and it does not equal to 100 000 Km, but equals to 100 000 metre

Thus, 100k Km = 100 000 Km

.: 100k miles = 100 000 miles

I hope this helps to resolve the confusion

Remember that these filters are intended for use on engines that may use tens of gallons of fuel per hour. For example, 500 hours @ 10 gallons/hour = 5,000 gallons. I think someone earlier said that it is recommended that the filter be changed every 3500 gallons.

On a TDI, 3,500 gallons would take you pretty far.

I seem to remember it was for Cat 350 CI V8 and had average of 500 hrs before replacement. I think Greg who researched filter and made and sold the filter was who put that out, but I may be off on the hours.

45 mpg x 500 x 4 = 22500 x 4 = 90,000 miles. :D

Although this happened before I joined the Club or even owned a TDI, I believe Greg was not the driving force to develop the Cat fuel filter hardware. A discussion about the design, development and testing can be found in this thread:
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=21433

My impression is that Greg was already selling fuel filtration systems for diesel pickups, along with a number of other products, so was a logical choice to distribute the Cat 2-micron fuel filter hardware. Someone who was there can correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes the guy that was inital mover on the project Drivebywire IIRC had selected the filter, but they had a problem figuring out a mount or adapter and Greg solved the final problem and got it manufactured. Regardless he was the one who finally got it manufactured and sold it through his business.

I'm looking to replace my fuel filter setup since for me to get the OEM one from overseas they cost me $96 each!!!!

First it appears that I'm going to have to figure out the capacity and the suction change from idle to redline on the one I have in there now.

Any other considerations?

Any one do this m to a 06? I am sick of the $40 filters that don't last! any input would be great!
Thanks
I only pay 18$ for my OEM filter at NAPA but I do get a good discount. I just bought a 03 Jetta to replace the 01 that was run off the RD last month by a Semi and it came with 2 cat filters.
Was there not a update to the filter top a while back. I am not sure how long this has been on the car but the car only has 38,000 miles on it and I plan on changing all the filters this weekend. Anything special in changing it to make it go smooth?

CAT fuel filter kit available yet for CBEA engine?

Does anyone here know if there is an existing CAT conversion kit that fits our 2009-2019 engines? Since the latest fuel system is so @#$%*& expensive this seems like the only way. Maybe this is addresed in another thread?

Nick D'Amico, username ndamico, has the Nicktane system for the previous generation, and may be working on something for the CR TDI engines. Here's a link to his website.
http://nicktane.com/osc/product_info.php?cPath=23_30&products_id=47

I don't know if Greg Landuyt plans on producing something new for the new engines, but I suspect not as the Cat filter hardware kits are a very small part of his business.

Thanks for the link. Interesting Article. However, I think I'd be happy just to go from 10 to 2 micron filtration. Not saying I can't be convinced, but if 2 micron is good enough for the trucking industry it's good enough for me.

Nick gives you a choice. One point: $110 or $140, it sounds like a whole lot of money. But it is a one-time purchase of the hardware, which can be transferred to your next vehicle and the one after that and so one, or can be resold if you ever buy a car that doesn't use any fuel. The CAT filters, at least, are cheap enough that, compared to the OE filters with the factory scheduled replacement schedule, the products sold by either Lubrication Specialist LLC or Nicktane will ultimately save you money.

I picked up my Jetta in 2007 and haven't replaced my Cat 2 filter yet. Think it's at least going on 3 years thus far based on when the previous owner installed it and no issues I can detect.

J2E: somewhere between 60k and 100k miles, just go ahead and swap it out. No reason to wait longer for it to fail/clog up. Replacement filters are cheap. But do not be surprised if you have an air leak problem caused by old O-rings. If so then I recommend some Vaseline.

I can't find the kit, I only find the filter. I used this link
http://www.lubricationspecialist.com/volkswagen-tdi/

Any suggestions, I need to change my fuel filter soon.
That is interesting -- Greg Landuyt has been selling the kit for, well, since at least 2004 when I bought one from him.

I have to think that if he'd just run out, then people could still order. Since the kits are not even mentioned on the website, I guess he's decided not to order the production of any more. Perhaps he's looked at the Nicktane kit and decided it was better than his, for about the same price. (I agree.)

For $99 you can get a Nicktane kit minus the filter -- the 2-micron Cat filters are cheaper if you source them locally, and IMO you should definitely order the model that fits the Cat filter element. The 1-micron filters might be a tiny bit better, but you can only buy the replacements from Nicktane and that's a negative in my book.

Woah! $100? I guess it does come with 1 $20 filter as well.

How much are OEM fuel filters, like $60?
The OEM filters are not that much, but:
1) they do not do nearly as good a job of removing particles from fuel, and
2) they are supposed to be replaced about every 20k miles.

If you pay $20-30 each 20k miles, then the cost of OEM filters adds up. On the other hand, the Cat 2-micron filters are good for up to 100k miles and the replacements are only about $15.

So a Nicktane kit will pay for itself in roughly 60k or 80k miles. And after that the savings just continue to add up.

And there are no moving parts, so you can move the filter kit to your next TDI, and the one after that, and so on. Or to a gas-engine car, too, if you ever decide to go that way -- super-filtered gasoline is just as good as super-filtered diesel.
