I just noticed today that when I coast, clutch depressed, in first gear I can hear a quiet hum sound. If I shift up to 2nd or any other gear I don't hear anything.

Perhaps it has always been this way but I just decided to listen closely today with the radio off for a change and this is what I heard.

Should I be concerned? 2015 Passat 6sp Man

I know exactly what you are hearing. My car did it three years ago when it was new, and made the same faint sound the entire time I had it until I sold it back not long ago. It is the sound of the input shaft of the transmission spinning and is just normal function of the transmission. The sound is most pronounced in first gear because first gear will spin the input shaft at the highest angular velocity for a given road speed. Normal and nothing to worry about! I would drive the car and worry less. :)

Thanks. I have been paying less attention to this car than any other in the past so I guess I am worrying less :)

I am going to turn the radio back on and forget about it
