98 Jetta Strut mounts

Was working on my new ride's front end today and noticed when I unload the front end, that the strut mounts move as much as 1/2 inch.

This seems a little scary. My friend tells me this is normal for VWs and some Audis.

Any thoughts?

It is normal. As the springs and rubber parts age and sag, the gap will get larger.
