I seem to recall a comment that VW sells cars with a 1.9L 4 cylinder direct injection diesel without a turbocharger in some markets.

Is this true? Does anyone have any further information on this? Counties sold in? Car model? PS or horsepower for the non-turbo engine? Does the engine use the VE distributor type injection pump, or is it PD style?

It is called the SDI, it's available in various models but mostly only the smaller cars (Polo, etc) due to not much power (64 HP?). It is a distributor-pump engine (not P-D).

vw sell a 1.9 normally aspirated non turbo diesel engine in the polo(64bhp) and golf (68bhp)in the uk. its very underpowered with a 0-60mph time of 17.2 seconds and a top speed of 99 mph in the golf (imperial miles).its mpg figuire is very similar to the 100bhp pd tdi and the old 90bhp tdi. but given that its sold at 3,000 pounds($4,500 us) less than a tdi it still sells fairly well even if it is an old engine

On the SDI non-turbo engine, are the injection pump controls fully electronic like the 90 HP TDI, or is the injection pump mechanically controlled?

The SDI engine only has 99lbs/ft of torque :/ i personally think they should replace this engine in the golfs with the 1.4TDI engine that is in the Polos which has 75bhp and 144lbs/ft, the 1.4TDI also has better claimed MPG than the SDI
