How often should I change the manual transmission oil in my 1998 Jetta TDI.

It appears a synthetic oil would work well.

What is the procedure for draining/ filling the transmission? Does anyone have photos?

I assume you mean a manual transmission, right? It's my understanding that VW doesn't intend for the synthetic gear lube they put in at the factory to be changed for a long, long time-- they don't even have a dipstick to check the oil! You should be fine for at the least 75,000 miles IMHO. Modern transmissions and lubricants seem to be more then up to the task of running for 6 digits before they need any serious attention.

Big Red,

You need a 17mm allen wrench or socket extension to loosen the filler and drain plugs. These transaxles hold a tad over 2 quarts of 75w-90, synthetic gear lube. Redline, Amsoil and VW all make a product for this application. About every 100k should be fine for a change interval ....

You can use either a funnel and some clear plastic tubing or a small Sta-Lube gear oil pump to refill the transaxle ....
