I converted my Audi 80 5cyl into diesel using VW 1.6TD engine, and made several tests on the city and highway, I still have much more work to do, but main concern is about engine power which is too low I think,
I will try to give you as much details as possible, so please bare with me, the engine starts just fine, no delay, idle around 850 rpm and can rev it to 4000 rpm easily, black smoke is visible on acceleration, when apply AC load the idle rpm drops into 550 or so with a lot of black smoke, and even more drop if I add gear, oh, I forget to tell, it’s automatic.
Whatever adjustment made to max fuel and idle screws I still get rpm drop, drop rate may vary depending on max fuel adjustment, I measured pump housing pressure around 30 psi with AC off and 35 psi with AC on, I checked the fuel lines, fuel filter, all OK, even attached outside tank to pump using new hoses to make sure, no change.
The pressure gauge flickers fast like +-8 psi, and pressure drops to zero within 3 seconds after shutdown.
I give it a try and tapped the bore of pressure relief valve and now housing pressure raised to 50 psi at idle, no luck, still rpm drops!
BTW, is the 50 psi at idle safe for pump operation?
I spend the last two months searching the net and forums for same case, no luck, what is wrong with this engine, in my location no VW specialist around to visit, so I am by myself here.
What to check more?
