Hello All - I could really use some help with getting my information in order before taking my car to the dealer. I'm going to first lay out the timeline of events, and then I'll post the logs. Not all facts may be relevant, but I'm putting down anything that may help. I guess a silver lining here is that this all pushed me to just go out and by my own Vag-Com.

Bought Car June 2017 - No real obvious/known issues until Nov. 2018. No Tune, No modifications other than aftermarket headlights. Only observation is that when the HVAC is set to window defrost, no air comes out of the driver side vent to blow on the side window. Also, when the defrost is selected the MGP really, really seems to take a hit from the compressor running.

One bit that is odd is the "heated seat" error code. I do not have heated seats.

Nov 15th - Snow in NJ/NYC, Complete chaos, and an 8hr drive home (50 mi)
Nov 19-23 - Sporadically Passenger airbag light on dash flashes and seat belt warning light comes on with nobody in the passenger seat.
Nov 23rd - 11F overnight temp. Flashing glow plug light, no CEL, Limp Mode until restart. OK afterwards.
Nov 26th - Mike at M&M pulled the codes and reset the log. There were "CAN Bus" reports and one code for "Turbo Actuator failed Response" (getting actual codes from Mike later today, will follow up later w/ log)
Nov 27th thru Dec 28th - No CEL, ECM, seatbelt, or other reported issues... however, the fuel economy as hand calculated fluctuated from 42.2 to 46.6 (historically had been 46-51 mpg)
Dec 30th - Overnight temps between 15F & 20F. Coming downhill Flashing glowplug light, slight stutter in engine, Brake pedal goes rigid after about 1/2"-1" of throw.
Dec 31 - CEL stayed on, but car did not go into limp, brakes worked.
Jan 1 - CEL goes out. Car averages about 40 mpg on drive home.
Jan 2 thru Jan 4 - Car is averaging about 47 mpg, but will need to confirm when I fill up.

I pulled the codes this morning after my drive to work, and below is what came up. Any help to know what this might be before I hand the car over to the dealer would be greatly appreciated.

I would check your battery voltage with a multi meter both key off engine off and key on engine running just to see what it says. This kind of seems like a potential ground issue but I’m just guessing. Has the car ever been tuned? I would also wonder about the aftermarket headlight lights maybe having some sort of water intrusion problem. If you clear the codes do they all come back quickly? I would also consider clearing the codes and unplugging the headlights and then see if you get a bunch of codes besides headlight failure to see if they are causing some sort of electrical issue.

Check the electrical connector and vacuum hose that go to the turbo actuator.

My passenger airbag light flashes occasionally as well, usually when my laptop is in the seat. The seatbelt warning light can be turned off in VCDS as well, but that doesn't solve the root cause.

No experience with the new MK7 platform but if I had that many codes on my car I would check the battery. It should be above 12.3 and really 12.3 is kinda low and may be to low for the newer vehicles. So 12.4 or above.

Also the alternator may be the actual culprit, a failing alternator won't keep your battery fully charged.

So with a mutlimeter check the battery sitting in your driveway not running. It should be 12.3-4 or more. Start the car, recheck at the battery it should now be 13.8-14.3.

If its below 13.5 put the red lead of the multimeter on the stud on the back of the alternator. It should read the same as on top of the battery. If it reads more your cable between the alternator and battery is not making a good connection. If it still reads low, you need to replace or rebuild your alternator or alternator pulley.

Also it might just be a bad connection on top of the battery. Pop the cables off, clean them up and reattach.

I'm seeing Mike at M&M tonight for an oil change, will ask him about checking those things as well. Added info per your question - No Tune. Will have to play with the headlights again when I get the chance.

I would also inspect wiring and hoses at boost control valve, probably still called n75 I guess. There is probably a test you can run for boost control in output tests. I think those is probably some sort of other electrical issue though.

Thanks, will add that to the list. I also just noticed the heated seat error code, but I don't have heated seats. Updated the first post.

MK 7s seem to be prone to wiring damage from rodents, particularly with stop-sale cars that sat on the lot for 1-2 years.

A couple of ideas: I guess you don't park in a garage. You may well have condensation / icing in places that will cause grounding problems and then when it warms up & the car dries out, they become less pronounced. Doesn't mean they'll go away forever.

Also, on defrost, the A/C compressor s running to try to cool down cool air. Yes, I said that correctly. Just turn the A/C off and blast the heat for a while.

I've learned not to even have my cell phone laying in the passenger seat - it triggers the alarm at very inconsiderate times.

Good luck and please let us know what you find out.

UPDATE: On 3 Jan I called Douglas VW and made an appointment. I dropped off the car at 745AM on 7 Jan. Worked with Dominick who asked for my "Authorization" number... I called the VW Claims line and was informed that b/c my car already had Phase 1 when purchased there was no Auth number and Dominick should have known to call to get the general work number it goes under.
Was informed yesterday that parts should arrive today (9 Jan) - guess they only ordered parts on Monday the 7th.
Phase 2 should be done tomorrow (10 Jan)
After the Recall/Phase 2 fix is complete they will start researching the other items. I thought it was really weird they couldn't start the work before tomorrow... maybe plug a computer in to confirm the codes, but that is what Dominick was sticking to. He assured me that this will all be taken care of as part of the same appointment. Looks like I'm in the loaner until Friday at this point. I'm nervous they are going to reset the codes and then call it "good" but that's likely just my general distrust for dealer service.
More to follow.

If it's showing airbag warning on the dash (not the occupancy detection) then it's electrical/sensor issue.

Occupancy "dings" vs "air bag error" two different issues, but could be related to electrical issues.

Water tight isn't something the MK7 are known for. Electrical gremlins are very tough to track down, but tell tail signs of condensation/moisture shouldn't be too tough to find.

Hey all, here is the update on how things went... and as of today are still going. I picked up my car from Douglas VW on the 18th. Even though the service window closes around 430/5 they were willing to hang out until 5/530 so I could get there after work. After the emissions update, I only have one "fault" now, but not sure this is really a fault:

1 Fault Found:
0020 - Tuner for Satelite Radio
B11CF 53 [009] - Deactivated

The green light for the Car-Net indicator is now off.

As for the Turbo Control fault and maybe brakes: It appears that they tracked down a vacuum leak in the "Vacuum Feed Tube." The hose PN is 04L-129-456-D. Described as "Vacuum supply line that runs from internal pump to brake booster feed and vacuum control to turbo." The description had them taking apart a lot of the engine bay... Fortunately it was all under warranty.

Dominic was willing to log into VW Hub and pull up the Option Codes associated with my car. He couldn't "print" them, but took a (blurry-ish) picture of the screen and printed that for me.

I had an automatic 2018 Jetta as my loaner and I was able to achieve around 38mpg driving to/from NYC every day into NJ. I wasn't as happy with the fit/finish as my GSW but it worked for the week I had it.

As for the CAN bus issues, I may have been the cause of that. I discovered on the Friday before I took my car to them that the trailer hitch adapter I had purchased isn't compatible with the GSW, but is with other VW's. I replaced that before bringing it to VW for service.

Overall I was happy enough with how it went, even though on the 25th I received a phone call from Douglas VW stating that the pictures they submitted didn't make VW happy. There is a sticker someplace that they need to remove and place a new one. That is relatively minor in the grand scheme and more annoying than anything else, but it means I need to burn a little vacation time to get to them to get it corrected.

I will track my mpg gain/loss through a few tanks to see what it shows. So far, the car seems to drive as well as it did before the work.

Hope that helps.
