Hey guys,

Recently brought a golf TDI diesel and when I tried to fill it up, certain fuel nozzles won't fully go in and the fuel system shuts off as if the car is full.

I've attached some photos of the inside of the fuel hole, but confused why it doesn't work. Is there a way of removing this, or will I just need to buy an adaptor?

Thanks!

Here in the USA there is a large nozzle for commercial trucks, and a smaller nozzle for passenger car diesels. The smaller nozzle has a lower flow rate, so minimizes spilling and splashing, and gets the tank a bit fuller. It's possible to fill a TDI with the large nozzle if you're very careful, but it's better to just stick to small nozzle pumps.

Earlier TDIs accept multiple sizes of fuel nozzle. Your filler neck likely has a misfuel restrictor installed to prevent the use of gasoline nozzles. There are three sizes of diesel nozzles at pumps, and the the smallest of these will open the restrictor for fill-ups. There are VW & BMW fuel adaptors available, including from IDP:

You can also modify the system, but VW may hold it against you if you later have complaints involving the fueling system. A search will reveal many good threads.
