I recently purchased a garmin gps unit. I have it mounted to the windshield to the left of the steering wheel. It appears to be an ok location but curious if anyone else has another suggestion for a mounting location.

Extreme upper left hand corner of windshield. Wherever you put it, make sure it is OUT of your line of sight of the road and road signage. Low and central on top of the dash is ideal.
It is amazing to me that the folks around Kansas City (downtown) will put a GPS right in front of their line of sight, so much so that they actually have to crane their necks to see the road. I do a double take every time I see this!

I bought the dashboard "friction" base and just set it on the in the center just to the right of the steering column.

Windshield center low as possible. I have the suction cup mount so I only have it in when I need it.
