I believe TDI MPGs actually increase while the engine is breaking in...which takes up to 35-40k miles. That's what the experts say, and that's what I experienced with my 09s.

FYI, I believe in DrivBiWire's philosophy re: diesel break-in. It is COMPLETELY insane, compared to what we were all taught about gas engines. I won't pretend to describe it here, and I don't have the link, but a search will find it for you. I had the opportunity to test it on one of my 09s, and its MPGs were consistently higher than the 09 that was NOT broken in using DBWs method.

I think the key is keeping that diesel maintained, low coolant temps and clogged emissions crap and bad wheel bearings can all take a toll and knock down a TDI's mileage too.
