Hey everybody - a couple weeks ago my 1996 green Passat TDI gave up on me, and since I'll be moving to the west coast in a few months, it's time for me to sell her. I bought it off my dad (who bought it new) in 2000 and all the service it's had has been at VW dealerships. It's got about 178k miles, the original timing belt, the serpentine belt was replaced in 2006, and the (not synthetic) oil has been replaced regularly.
Back in April it revved down and failed to start again, and after the battery was replaced and alternator was deemed okay it ran fine until a couple of weeks ago, when once again it powered down. I'm guessing the alternator needs to be replaced, since the battery is new.
As with most VWs its age, it's got a number of cosmetic problems, as you can see in my pictures. The front right bumper was torn on a curb in 2003 and is held on with a bungee cord, the plastic on the rear right taillight was cracked earlier this year, and the driver's side side view mirror's glass is broken out. The passenger's side window motor and the A/C motor needs to be replaced, the paint on the hood has been chipping off for a long time, and all the cup holders have been broken off at one point or another.
For some reason the VW dealership from which it was bought (and where all the routine service was done before 2000) doesn't have a service history on file, but the VW dealer in Durham, where I've had the oil changed and serpentine belt replaced, has my service history for the past four years.
Clearly this car is a fixer-upper opportunity, but with some investment I'm sure she will go for many, many more miles. I'm asking $1200 - you can see a few pictures in my gallery (JBandy is my member name). Feel free to get in touch with me at bandyj@gmail.com if you're interested!
