heres what IDparts told me:
Yes, MANN has swapped the "TOP" markings on these filters. This has happened a few times now. I *think* that the confusion comes from customer feedback. If you put the filter on the spindle, and the spindle is on the bench, you are effectively putting the filter in upside down. So, "top" means away from the spindle. But, the spindle faces downwards, so the top becomes the bottom.
I think that MANN is unsure which side to put "TOP" on to make it clear for customers, and, I'm sure they get bad feedback both ways.
Here is what to remember - the inside baffle holds oil in the media, thus, it must be at the bottom of the filter when installed.
little confusing because I dont know what the spindle is, or how the bench part works. top should always be top no?? but makes sense I guess. coulda swore I flipped one upside down and looked at the bottom, if not even tried it. guess not.
