I have red steering wheel logo at instruments. I have changed to power steering unit twice ( first second hand , secondd time "refurbished"). Both times unit works for couple of days. Then it starts to show red steering wheel when started hot - it works in the morning after night rest. Eventually it does even work at morning. I have also changed to wiring harness, battery, checked grounds. I have also tried to connect it when it is not attached to car. No help. Unit takes 150 mA of current so there is something going on inside unit.
Car is 2003 Touran (same as Golf mk5 and power steering is generation 1). Generation 1 is not made anymore and car is is not compatible with gen2.
Is there same kind of security feature at the power steering like in some air bags that if it finds out that there is some kind error in the components of power steering it goes to safe mode when it is not possible to connect with Rosstech? I gues in the airbags there have been such safe modes.
First it gives this kind of error:

Try cleaning the grounds connections. All the grounds, especially the one that the steering module is connected to. But, clean them all.

I had the same problem around the same mileage (226k for me). Intermittent at first like you, then later completely failed. Turned out to be a frayed wire.
