Cold start smoke?
All the time smoke while at operating temperature?
The latter could be late timing.

its at all temperatures have checked timing but will check again tomorrow.
just wondering if a timing belt can stretch enough to cause it as timing was recently checked.
thanks for your input appreciated.

i was wrong it started again at operating temperature under load.
It's been a while since I owed my TDI but if it's not a timing issue a faulty fuel pressure regulator on the IP could cause the smoke. It's located on the top of the pump, remove and see if the guts have fallen out.

Unfortunately, "0" is also what the torsion will read if it's off the scale in either direction, so it can fool you.

Perhaps dial in some something just off-zero and see if it helps.

If the above idea doesn't work (try that first), a faulty CPS could give a 0 torsion reading also
