Hello All!

After learning of a faulty exhaust valve on my XT Forester- I've been searching all over for a TDI around Minnesota. Last night- I found a nice 2012 with 65,000 miles on it. Very clean- great service records- everything up to date.

Now, I have a little OBD II scanner, and in the days of using this with my Subaru- I know that things like green tests results and things that say "pass" are a good thing. Things that are red and say "fail" are a bad thing. Kinda like how my Cylinder 4 misfire count kept getting higher.

Anyways- on the way home from the dealer- I plugged my sensor in and starting to measure some reading. I was a little surprised when I started to see red and things "failing", as well as a few misfires from various cylinders. Now, I have a 5-day return policy on the car, and I would love to keep it- but I know what happens if a car keeps misfiring.

So, does this data make any sense to you experts? I know misfire are bad- what could be causing these? There was a little bit of a rough idle, but that smoothed out after driving 60 or so miles. Fuel filter has been changed every 10,000. Are any of these failed tests not relevant to this motor? Should I call the dealer about this? I would hate to make a costly mistake here. Thanks so so much!

Ordinary OBD equipment is usually NOT designed to handle VW diesels. Find someone with a VAG-COM or visit a dealer for a scan. Example O2 measurements and data are usually NOT relevant to the operation of a TDI - they ARE important to gas engines of any manufacture.

Thanks for the reply fourdiesel- that's good info to know. Would the misfire data still be relevant or something to worry about?

I'll see if the dealer will give it a scan w/ their equipment and print out the results for me. I"m sure it was already scanned- but I just want to ensure there are no hidden issues w/ this vehicle.

Thanks!

The misfire data is the point - I believe your scanner is misinterpreting something it sees on your TDI as a misfire and reports it accordingly. I have never seen anything about misfires - at all - on any Vag-Com TDI scans. Since a diesel works by physically squirting fuel into a high pressure environment misfires in the usual sense are impossible. (bad fuel or no fuel are, of course possible). But yours is a 2012 and mine are older so ??
If no dealer is handy - or interested - see a good local independent that works on diesels. You may have to pay for some shop time but you will be able to trust the answer.

Info from Diagnosis at the dealer:

ROAD TESTED, NO MISFIRE FELT. SCANNED FOR FAULTS, NONE STORED. TESTED FUEL PRESSURE, WITHIN SPEC. NO PROBLEM FOUND, NO REPAIRS MADE.

The advisor stated that the technicians cleaned residue off of several sensors- they didn't provide me with specifics.

Another reason they said that might have contributed to that initial "misfire" feel is the fact that the diesel had been in the tank for 2.5 months, at below quarter of a tank. We recently had a rash of 20-degree weather and they said this could still be the "summer blend" diesel.

So, maybe I was just a little cautious with bringing it in- but I feel better having them double-check the vehicle. I'm hoping that a new tank of gas a few miles ln the car will really dial it in. I'm loving driving this Touareg- so smooth and nice! Thanks for all the suggestion. I think I'll look into getting a VAG specific OBD II BT Scanner to get some reliable data.

Start getting in the habit of saying "fuel" instead of "gas" when you have a diesel.
Don't "gas" up, don't go to a "gas" station, don't look at your "gas" gauge.

So much to learn- I love it! Yes, fuel it up. I suppose it should be referred to as a "rig" instead of a car or a vehicle, right?

Looking forward to testing the rig in 12+ inches of snow forecasted for MN tomorrow!
