It is mostly flat and rural highway most of the way. I am averaging around 45 with the Golf better if I slowed down a little more....

Just had my best mileage yet, 894.6 miles, 16.933 gal: 52.83 mpg. Low fuel light came on at 860.4 miles. This is with a 50 mile each way commute, 90% hwy driving, with the last 14 miles limited to 45mph.

Had my best tank ever on the last fill 5/10/13. 801 miles / tank, 44.6 MPG. Current tank is at 790 with 60 miles showing on the range screen. MFD is showing 49.2 for this tank. Warmer weather in MI has been helping a lot!

With 52+ mpg hitting a 900+ mile tank is easily doable, you still had at least a gallon left... if you have a filling station you trust within comfort range. My trustworthy filling stations are about 60 miles apart so that is one of my limiters.

The range shown on the display was 58 miles so I know I could have made 900 miles but I was at the end of my work week. It was just more convenient to fill up to be ready for the next work week.

It may seem easily doable, until the significant other is whining about the possibility of walking home. :) I don't see myself doing 900+ on a regular basis, but it was nice to see that it can be done.

After looking at the amounts of fuel people are cramming in, it's likely that LeeM had 2 gallons left in the tank, and therefore could have probably pulled out a 1000K mile tank if he were so inclined!

From my experience, that last 14 miles of your commute is really helping your average. With a warm engine/fluids on a flat surface I'll imagine you are seeing 65+ MPG, am I close or is it even higher?

When I drive into town (15 miles) I can now and then hit over 80mpg on the "Av consumption" guage, for the trip. But that is losing 1000 feet of elevation and with a good wind at my back, and doing some coasting too. :D

On the way back it is typically 45mpg...

Now that my break-in is about over, I'm seeing 50+ mpg tanks. It's harder to keep my speed down than with my old B4 though!

I bought this fantastic vehicle in October and have 20,000 miles on it. Many highway miles for work plus city miles. A tank has never been below 40 mpg. 48 mpg is the average tank. I have gotten 56 mpg on the I-state. Wind affects the mpg as much as anything. It is rock-solid and far better than any hybrid. I also have an 01 1.8t Bug turbo with 260,000 miles. Synthetic oil is amazing!

About 30k miles on the odometer now, and latest tank is getting mid 50's for 60-90 mile highway trips. Hit 60 mpg displayed at one point for @ 20 miles stretch. Shell fuel with a few OZs of Opti-Lube. I think summer fuel being back in circulation has a large factor in this.

There are 2 kinds of people in this world-those that cry when they get to the gas station, and those that laugh. I always smile when I'm leaving. Out running errands tonight, AC on, all surface streets and I had it up over 40 MPG when I got home.

surprising mileage performance

I took a trip with family (two adults, two kids) and luggage. Ran the air conditioner maybe half the time, because the mountain passes and canyons were usually nice and cool. Four mountain passes (~8700feet, ~10,000feet, ~8,800 feet, ~8,000 feet) and LOTS of slow windy canyon cruising at high altitude.

We started in Albuquerque New Mexico, highest was Cumbres Pass, also cruised up to Creede CO, which is near 8,800 feet (not one of the passes). And drove twice through Raton Pass (~7800 feet) between Raton and Trinidad. The mileage indicated on the dash varied, went as high as 60mpg once, but had to go through more mountains after that trek across the San Luis valley.
Here is a photo when it was approaching 60mpg, when the combined trip and range showed 1100 miles!!!

When we tanked up and the range was still showing 200 miles to go, with well over 700 on the trip meter. The REAL CALCULATED mileage was abut 54 mpg. I get about 40mpg in the city, with about 20% beltway/highway miles routinely. This was a surprise! Please forgive me for all of my skeptical comments on other people's claims. WOW.

16 miles round trip of 100% city, I usually average between 38mpg and 40mpg. We are hopefully moving soon so I will have a little longer commute but it will be almost entirely highway. I should mention I work odd hours and never have to deal with heavy traffic.

Just filled. 920 miles traveled and 17.4 gallons used for 52.9 MPG. DTE showed 5 miles until empty. (which probably meant at least 55 miles until true empty.

That is coming up next, on this tank, traveled- 599 miles, range- 435 miles. It will depend where in my travels I come up to one of my trusted stations.

Nice! I had a 62 MPG average going for a couple hundred miles this last weekend, at one point I had 402 miles on the trip meter and a remaining range of 845! Then I hit the interstate! :(

Not going to hit 1000 miles on this tank, doable, but need to refill before a trip on Thursday. On this tank I had 932 miles showing on the odo when the refuel warning light came on. I won't put 20 miles on it before I head out of town and I will have to refuel before I go.

Wow, that is impressive. Should be 56 MPG or so?

Very good,
Mileage 2 is showing 55.8 mpg and it reads slightly low compared to Pen/paper calculations since I redid the speedo/odo calibrations. :)
I will let you know exact mpg's Wed when I refuel.

Another good run, 971.5 miles, range to empty- 40 miles, total gallons- 17.6, mileage- 55.3mpg. Had to fill up now as I am heading out on a trip at 04:00 in the morning and I didn't have the range to make my closest trusted station.

I'm keeping a fuelly log now, see below. Best tank was 55mpg. Still really breaking the thing in as it is just at 10k miles.

Those top numbers were generated with something like 99% highway, but my best tank was driving over the Rockies on I-80. When I do city driving I'm not usually sitting at stop lights a lot, and according to the internal meter I have gotten great numbers in town going 30 or 40mph. I keep my speed to 65 or even less at night on the highway (deer are an issue where I live). I do drive gently and tend to slow down a bit going into a headwind. Oh, and Oregon has a 55mph speed limit on non-Interstate highways...
