I installed a MPGuino (http://ecomodder.com/forum/opengauge-mpguino-fe-computer.html), which taps into the ECU's MFA signal for fuel, and VSS for miles. The default code only tracks Engine Off Coasting, but I tweaked mine to also track the regular type of coasting. The threshold is something like "less than 0.20 gallons per hour, and greater than 20mph". I also custom-coded the speed tracking summary for fuel/distance at different speeds.

Ok...Let's do this in order per the thread Title.

60 MPG club.

Plus a number of fill-ups totaling 1.203 gallons prior to the start of the run, above the normal full to the lip fill, and thus added to the total fuel used on this run.

equals 61.3 mpg (see distance below)

900 mile club

1000 mile club

Any questions?

oh, and this is a Stock Mk6 Jetta.

Just gotta rub it in haha. That is amazing -- I was excited when I got my first 700 mile tank. That was >300 miles from St. Louis to Lousiville KY and the rest work commuting trying my damndest to keep the MFA showing 50 MPG each trip. I am confident if I did the entire trip to AND from STL and home I could have averaged the 53+ to put me right around 750-800. But usually, I have my pregnant wife and dog in the car, so that means lots of stopping to eat and pee haha. I rarely travel the interstate alone any more so it is hard to take a road trip and patiently drive for FE.

After the work I had to do....please grant me a little self indulgence and crowing. :D

However, moving on, a lot of factors in RL can prevent one from even attempting these kind of numbers. Some we can control, others we often can't. I'm lucky in that my conditions, currently, allow for this. Of course, I lack the dedication to try to rake up high mpg numbers all the time, but still overall I do pretty good simply because so much of my driving is longer distance highway. After all the car isn't even 2 years old yet, and I'm already over 75K on the clock.

Not the best for a B4, but my first legit one. I've had quite a few 700+ tanks and an "unconfirmed" 800+ tank (as in, the battery was unplugged and the 800 didn't show on the odo).

I've never really tried for a 900 tank until this one where I spent exactly 0 miles on the interstate. A normal tank for me is at least 1/2 interstate, and I always drive traffic speed.

This tank was almost 100% highway.

I also had approximately 1.4 gallons left in the tank when I filled up. Good for a personal best of 52.11.

My first legit 50+ tank along with my first 900+ tank! Of course I may have been able to pull 1000 out of this tank, but I'll save that one for another day.

I don't know if this is in the right place. I don't know how to start an 1100 mile club.
From 9 Aug. 2014 through 10 Aug. 2014 I drove from Sedona, AZ to Leander, TX on one tank of fuel. This was a concerted effort to see how good mileage was possible even if impractical. It was grueling. I rarely exceeded 47 mph. It is hot in Phoenix and West Texas in August! I did not use the A/C!!

Results: 1,123 miles driven. 16.4 gallons of fuel purchased in Leander. I estimate my tank to be 17 gallons. This works out to be 68.48 mpg or 3.43 l/100 km.

I shall not do it again.

A few caveats: Sedona is higher than Leander by about 3000 ft. I benefitted from that. I just thought you would be interested. I don't see how I could get much better mpg in this car.

Truly impressive. Certainly the 3000 foot drop helped but that is easily swallowed up by the 23 miles past 1,100 you went.

JohnWilder - impressive work!

There is a 70 MPG / 1100 / 1200 mile thread located here

So question for you guys.

when I fill up my tank, should I actually wait some time after the first click for the "foam to settle down?

I routinely fill up a max of 14 gallons. And thats close to the red line.

USCGTO - if you want the most consistent/accurate fillup, you need to get clear fuel sitting at the top of the fuel neck for more than 60 seconds (quite a challenge with a new passat and mis-fuellling preventer installed).

The other way is to use a rolling 3-5 tank average so that the fill to fill variations due to foaming, different pump/nozzle/angle of the car/etc are minimized. Use a 10 tank rolling average for more accurate (but more filtered) data.

You won't get the ~17 gallons that the MKIV's get in your passat.

Well, I did it again.

I blew a heater hose a few weeks ago, which I suspect also caused a leak in my head gasket, which has caused me to lose coolant every day (seems to mostly blow out the reservoir, due to overpressure). To stem my coolant losses, I've tried to keep my speed below 65 (under 65, I only lose 6-10oz per 50miles; at 70+, I'll lose 30oz or more). As a consequence of this granny-driving, I've been getting mid-60s mpg.

Last time I hit 900, I was P+G'ing. This time, I mostly used cruise control to keep my speed down. As I neared 900, I did more drafting and P+G to stretch it out. I was going to chicken out and fill up at 895, but I was confident I could eke it out one last trip... and... I did! The final results:

948.1 miles, 15.03 gallons, 63.1mpg
Avg speed= 53.1mph, Coasted 260.5mi

At 0 mph: 0.14gal, 01:17 (hh:mm)
1-29mph: 1.14gal, 42.9mi, 37.7mpg
30-39mph: 0.75gal, 50.5mi, 66.9mpg
40-49mph: 0.78gal, 58.7mi, 75.7mpg
50-59mph: 1.48gal, 115.3mi, 78.0mpg
60-69mph: 9.12gal, 598.5mi, 65.6mpg
70-79mph: 1.55gal, 81.1mi, 52.3mpg
80+mph: 0.02gal, 0.9mi, 50.48mpg

I was late for work on one or two days, so I had to push my speed higher than desired. Also, I hadn't figured out the speed/coolant connection until 200miles into the tank, so if I knew then what I know now... Well, I've now got half a mind to try for 1000. All I need is to bump 63mpg to 66.6.

I poured in a spare gallon when it was all over, and I had to crank a couple times to restart the engine, so now I'm pretty, pretty, pretty sure that 15.0 gallons is my max capacity.

Well, I made it. After the last tank, I figured I could hit 1000 if I used more P&G, and I was right. I landed at home with 1021.5. About an hour later, figuring I still had 0.1 gallons left, I decided to make a 2-mile roundtrip to the bank. It barely started, ran a little iffy, and wouldn't start again without me adding a spare gallon from my trunk. That 0.1g was probably in the tank, but completely drained out of the fuel lines. Guess I wont do that again.

I don't think I'll try for 1000 again, now that it's been done. I've averaged 59-60 in the 3 days since, and it feels nice to just drive and not work at squeezing every last drop. Driving under 65 has been killing me inside, too. I'll probably be hitting 900 several more times, due to the traffic patterns I get to/from my current job, but I'm not gonna fight for it or worry if I fall short.

BTW, my MPGuino kinda screwed me this time. My last tank, it overstated my fuel consumption by 0.18gal (+1.5%), but this time it understated by 0.1gal (-0.5%), so there's my missing 0.1g. OTOH, if I thought I was 0.1g lighter, I might have chickened out just past 1001mi, instead of going for 1021.

Enough of that. The numbers....

1023.26 mi, 15.02 gal 68.1 MPG

Avg Speed= 48.57 mph Coasted: 484.56 mi

At Idle: 01:25 (h:m) 0.21 gal
1-29mph: 76.21 mi 1.72 gal 44.26 mpg
30-39mph: 65.84 mi 0.93 gal 70.57 mpg
40-49mph: 68.68 mi 0.90 gal 76.41 mpg
50-59mph: 214.61 mi 2.72 gal 78.81 mpg
60-69mph: 574.73 mi 8.08 gal 71.12 mpg
70-79mph: 23.11 mi 0.38 gal 60.78 mpg
80+ mph: 0.00 mi 0.00 gal 0.00 mpg

I made it to the 900 mile club! My manual 05 Golf just did 901 miles on 15.972 Gallons, 56.4 MPG. Last tank was 55 MPG. Here is what I have done to the car.

GDE Eco tune
205f thermostat
Continental Pure Contact tires 195/65 15
15" Konig Zero-In wheels 15lbs each

I have been thinking about swapping my 5th gear but I hear it kills the cruise control. Winter was about 10 MPG lower. Even with the thermostat mod it had trouble getting up to temp. The skid plate was missing when I got the car so adding one should help. I also have an active grill shutter planned to help aerodynamics and warm up.

I made 900.6 miles on 14.453 gallons back in September of 13 with my 2011 Jetta before I knew I could vent the tank and fill more than 14.5 gallons. Have not tried for high total miles since then though I average high 50s mpg easily during the warmer months.

Happy to join the 1000 mile club! 1005.0 miles with 17.028 gallons to fill up for 59.02 mpg. Passed a Sinclair at 994 miles or so, having gone 93 miles "after the light came on" and knowing I had to climb up over Trapper's Loop pass to Snow Basin before coming all the way down to my Chevron.
Sphincter was more than a bit tight on the way up, but it was glorious when I crested the pass! Sad ending though: after fillup was happy, but distracted thinking about things I coulda woulda shoulda done to get 60 mpg, coasted into the garage a bit fast and sideswiped our generator, blowing out right front tire  Then realizing my old stealership about 70 miles away had not put my locking lug nut key back when they swapped my snow tires.
Anyway, have been pulse and glidling (gliding with idling), the terrain here is great for it. Scan gauge II has for me not been very accurate with P and G. It seems like even with half-the-way-there every tank calibration doesn't prevent wild swings. Also notable that during pulses (but almost never during steady driving under load), the instant mileage is often 9999. I'm sure that's how it tries to "correct", but it seems to lead it to artificially inflate the mileage more in P and G than it does when just cruising (this tank it read 73 instead of 59!). Another factor may be that my wife drives my car quite a bit during most tanks (and with a very different style), not sure if that confuses it.
I have the 0.681 5th gear, right now 3 ecopias, also an early 2 inch metalnerd lift.
I had some kind of chip awhile ago (can't remember which one!) but didn't feel like I got noticeably extra mileage, but did get extra smoke on WOT, along with crazy power of course. I'll have to read about some new chips people are talking about since few years ago (Malone and Eco).

I was originally trying to make it in this club, but finally gave up. :( It just wasn't worth it to me. People were getting pissed at how slow I was going on the highway and I was creating somewhat of a traffic jam on any road I would get on. I made peace with myself that I wouldn't make it to this club and have been happier ever since. I'm focusing on 200hp instead.

Just wanted to say congrats to anyone that makes it! It truly is more difficult than what it looks!

Take out your stage II cam and go back to OEM, get a stage II tune, run 0w30 engine oil and G070 in your transmission, drive the speed limit and 60's will be much easier for you.
I may be in too deep. :(

I have a stage III tune and upgraded to 225/50/17 tires. I think my days of seeing 50+ mpg are gone. I can say the car handles much better than when I had 195/65/15s on here.
