Hi guys.
I have been a long time Motul user. I own a Passat Pd tdi 125kw equipped with a dpf filter and know that i need 507.00 Specific oil. Its simple there. Now, i have bought a VW Lupo 3L, 2001, 1.2Tdi Pd and am wondering which oil would offer the best protection. Many people say it is better to use 5w40 than 5w30, because it provides better cam and lifter protection, and even go to point out that using 5w30 damages the csm and lifters. I change oil every 10000km. So, which would be a better choice, Motul Specific 505.01 or Specific 507.00? I poured Motul Specific 5w30 507.00 and done 10k km without any issues, but would it be wise to maybe switch to Motul Specific 5w40 501.00? Motul specifies that 507.00 is fully backward compatible with 505.01, yet which is a better choice!? Thanks.
Yours,
Ivan

Didn't those cars originally call for 506.01?

Since that engine is so hard to work on, I'd want the best oil possible. If you can find a 5w40 505.01 oil that might work well.

It's a PD engine, so all the lube oil precautions of the PDs apply. 505.01/506.01 are the recommended specs, and even though 507.00 supercedes both, it specs a lower amount of SAPS and friction-modifying additives in the oil in the interest of protecting the newest emissions equipment. On paper, VW says any of oil meeting the 3 above specs will be fine; anecdotally 505.01 would give the best wear protection due to the additive chemistry; 506.01 for fuel economy due to the lowest viscosity and 507.00 (5W30) somewhere in between the other two in both respects.

Ok. Tnx for replies. Compy was right. I checked the service book. it originally called for 506.01, and the only recommended replacement is 507.00. Ive decided to stick with 507.00. I noticed that there appeared a new Motul Specific 507.00 oil but it is 0W30!!! I thought it could be the best choice for both my cars due to my many short trips and cold starts in winter months. But, apart from seeing it in my country, it seems not to exist anywhere else. No mention of it by Motul itself, no data specs, nothing. I hope its not something fake. Here it is :)

Good post TDIMeister.

Based on many years of field data in North America PD TDIs the one oil to avoid is the mediocre 505.01 in 5W30 flavor. It is the one that USA dealers mostly used on many PDs in the (Castrol brand) starting around 2004. This gave a bad name in the USA to anything 5W30 to be used in PD TDIs regardless of being the newer VW spec 507.00 or not and the chemistry of the oil base (group III, IV/PAO, V/Ester, etc.).

Amsoil.

Before the panty-wadded get resprung like a hardtail rear end, just try it.

Started running it in '96 in our BMWs for extended drain intervals in touring trips, and have not lost a machine yet; towing truck, bikes, race bikes, engines, trans., two-strokes, you name it.

Post a pic of that engine would ya?

What a ridiculous no-statement. Anyone running any manufacturer spec'ed oil with proper change intervals can expect to get many years and miles of problem-free operation. It is not a binary question of "use any other oil, engine blows up in short order; use Amsoil, engine will be shiny and fart unicorn rainbows til Kingdom come."

I've found a deal for Shell Helix Ultra Professional 507.00 0w30 and got that. The engine is running great. For a 1.2tdi 3L that's the exact spec, this or 5w30. I bought 0w30 for better cold starts in winter....

Here in the US you would need to expect a miracle to find locally (or even online) the equivalent Pennzoil 0W-30 507.00 spec oil!

Maybe easier to find in Canada ...
