Hello

My 2013 Passat SE 6 speed manual has gotten this code twice now in the last 300 miles. Car has 51,000 miles and seems to be running ok. I do have the Ross Tech VCDS and that is what I used to retrieve the code and clear it twice now. Here is exactly what it says. I did a search here and didnt find anything. Any ideal where I should start checking?

I've seen this come up in the other model sections. Mostly the late A4 chassis cars with the BEW engine (first to have an O2 sensor). Check through the freeze frame data to see if the fuel trim (I think it's LOD?) is 0. Basically, during engine braking - the O2 sensor is still reading fuel when the ECU says there isn't any. On the BEWs, it's been a defective sensor. I actualy just changed mine yesterday (04 Jetta) for this same problem, so I'll find out shortly if it holds true.

Thanks Gforce,

I need to learn the VCDS a little better to do that. I am really basic when it comes to the VCDS. I can scan for codes and even changed a few things in some of the controllers with the help from this great site.

I will read up a little more on it and give it a shot.

I think a scan will give you that information. If you saved it (or when it happens again), post the scan results. I pulled mine through my scangauge II after reading other threads with the same problem. Every time mine was triggered I was engine braking - usually 4th or 5th gear (based on speed and RPMs).

I think that should still be covered under the emissions warranty though...

Hey Guys

I could still use some help with this code. I scanned it again today and the posted results are below. I would appreciate any help or suggestions provided. I had the new software recall performed and the dealer would not scan and check the code without me providing them 160. If it was under warranty they would have covered it but if not then I was out the 160.

One other question I have is about the AdBlue. I got the 1500 mile warning and added 2.5 gallons up when the 600 mile warning came on. How long does it take for the warning to go away? I have only driven it about 10-15 miles and started it multiple times today and it is still there. Tomorrow I will be talking it on a 65 mile drive one way and then back so hopefully that will do it.

I thought the freeze frame data would show up in a scan - interesting that it does not... If you go into the engine controller with VCDS see if you can find it. Pretty stupid that the dealer wouldn't check a code while they are doing the recall - they are already plugged in.

Handing them that scan might help them determine if it's something covered under the emissions warranty. Otherwise, might be cheaper to just change the O2 sensor. Looks like it runs $100 to $150 depending on where you get it (actual Bosch).

As far as the DEF - mine cleared immediately, but I think the actual procedure is to turn on the ignition without starting the car to let it 'learn' the level?

gforce1108,

Thanks for your reply again. I cleared the code and it came back on today on the way home. The DEF light went out after about 15 miles into my commute to work today. I will try and check for that freeze frame data to ee if that shows us anything.

Do you happen to have the part # and location of that sensor? I may just pull it and see what it looks like or just replace it and be done with it.

Been a rough winter with this car this year. I also need to replace the windshield now from a stone chip and then with an icy commute and the defroster on I now have a really nice long crack. I swear this windshield has to be softer than most or the angle of it. I have more little rock chips and it looks like it has been sandblasted.

Thanks again

gforce1108,

Do you think this is the right one? I checked on IDI Parts but nothing listed there. Kinda surprised by that one.

http://www.autozone.com/emission-co...2-0l-turbo-dsl-dohc/182659_108084_1784_97999/
That's the same part number I came up with. I haven't actually looked where it's located, but since it's the upstream one, it should be after the turbo, but before the first component in the exhaust.

I don't think it's just VW with the new windshields... I've heard multiple people complain about damage to their new cars when they never had one before. Not sure if it's different materials, or the angle, or a combination. So far so good with mine! My Jetta has 210k and is pitted badly so even if the Passat is getting worn, it looks a whole lot clearer :)

Any luck getting this fixed? My '12 Passat with 39k miles just threw this code today. I'm out of town for the weekend so just stopped at an AutoZone to have the code read. I'll get more data from my VCDS when I get home. The car seems to be running just fine and still getting >40mpg so I'm not too worried about it at this point but it would be great if this was covered under the emissions warranty extension!

I ordered a new O2 sensor and will replace it as soon as I get it. Hopefully one day this week. Mine has been on for months with no noticeable problems. No luck for me getting covered under warranty because the dealer wawnted to charge me to scan it even though they were already hooked up to th computer to do the recall software update.

Sounds good I'll be interested to hear if that fixes the issue! I was finally able to plug my car in and read the codes for myself. Looks like a similar code but I also got something with the glow plug. I went ahead and cleared it for now so we will see if it comes back before I take any further action. This is what I saw:

I went ahead and ordered a new O2 sensor for mine. I reset the check engine light twice and it came back within 50 miles each time. I found it on Amazon for $75 (http://amzn.com/B00427MHNA). Bosch part number 17148. Have you found any good instructions on replacing it?

Sorry it has been so long since I got back to an update. It has been crazy busy for me. I did order the part a few months ago and it just sat on the workbench. Well today I had some spare time so I went for it and it was not a very hard job at all to replace. I should have done it sooner but I thought it was going to take much more time. It took less than an hour for sure. I cleared the fault light and took it for a quick ride and so far so good. I will take it for a much longer ride tomorrow and report back if there is any issues.

Thanks go out to gforce1108 for helping me along with this issue and keeping me straight and on the right track.

Did roughly 150 miles today of mixed driving and so far so good. While I had the car in the shop I even upgraded my fogs to the H11's and that was a nice improvement.

Hi all,
I have this code too 5120 with P2196. The car is ok, mpg, no check engine light. Just a little bit lag which i think is normal. Should i change this sensor?
The DPF is like this

IDE00427 Particle filter: difference pressure 1 hPa
IDE00428 Particle filter: offset for differential press. 3 hPa
IDE00430-ENG104207 Particle filter: field regeneration request status-Bit 0 00000000
IDE00432 Particle filter: time since last regeneration 5552 s
IDE00433 Particle filter: oil ash volume 0.12 l
IDE00434 Particle filter: soot mass calculated 10.47 g
IDE00435 Particle filter: soot mass measured -0.57 g
IDE00436 Particle filter: kilometers since last regeneration 55774 m
IDE01407 Particle filter: fuel consumption since last regeneration 3.23 l
IDE01408 Charge limit for field regeneration 22.65 g
IDE01409 Charge limit for service regeneration 40.00 g
IDE03353 Particle filter differential press. sensor: uncond. voltage 1011.6 mV
