So... I have to ask.. What needs to be glued?
It took some tricks to get the transmission in a position where I could fit all the parts, but fit they do!
I pried back the flap that hangs down from the unibody frame rail that blocks the back of the transmission for access, I also had to loosen the sub-frame/k-member to get enough space to fit everything without removing the transmission. Having to do this is specific to the B4 Passat...
For glueing and sealing we use:Incidentally, I note that some of the components need to be glued, how long does the glue take to fully harden? (I.e., is it safe to drive the car immediately, or should it be left for a while to allow the glue to cure?)
Nothing has to be heated or freezed! The splines are deliberately designed tighter with overhang, but if you process as the manual says (knocking over aluminium piece), you won't have any issues.I took some pictures of John.Jackson9213's as he asked me to post them. Every thing was pretty good but when joining the male end of the splines to the female end there was a bur as it would not assemble properly by hand. A simple filing, cleaning and freezing/heating will eliminate the problem. Or you could use a BFH
With a B4, this flap has to be cut or bent out of the way to change the stock 5 th gear in the car. Not enough clearance to change the stock gear. So the anser is no.This is the part I was waiting for - I was under my B4 this weekend resealing the oil filter adapter, and looking at that metal shield made me think there would not be enough clearance to slide the new end cover on. Would you have had enough room to get the job done if the 6th gear kit fit inside the stock (shorter) end cover?
Yes, exactly correct. All 3 of us tried to hand fit each and every part. The only part we could not hand fit went together just right when we followed instructions.Noting has to be heated or freezed! Don't forget Johnny_Law did all the pictures of the kit. They are great!Well, mine is ordered and the money transferred. $1715 out the door to Florida with bank wire transfer fee. I am looking forward the getting the parts and starting the job! Thanks for all the great pictures and reports Matt & John.
Short answer: no. You need to have quite a lot of room to fit the pullers onto the original 5th gear components. If you wanted to simply change out for a taller 5th gear with the trans still in the car, you'd have to at the very least pry back that flap on the B4. In order to fit the new cover on, you definitely need to lower the transmission (since the main engine and trans mounts are bolted to the sub frame, you loosen the bolts for the sub frame and lower it). This is the part I was waiting for - I was under my B4 this weekend resealing the oil filter adapter, and looking at that metal shield made me think there would not be enough clearance to slide the new end cover on. Mike, have you been given a shipping date?My installation date is the 18th June Looking forward to it.

You guys already know this but Matt knows his stuff! If you ever make it up to the SEA area, hit me up and well grab a cold one.
Oilburner, one word, yes.Is this different from the transmission swap that was being done some time ago?
