Help me chose my first VW

Folks,

I am in need of a new vehicle and wanted a TDI Sportwagon. Unfortunately I am scared to pull the trigger on a brand new car, but am OK with a used car. My budget is 13K. I am a cyclist and a snowmobiler so my new car needs to be able to tow a 1500 pound trailer and have enough room to store my bike inside the vehicle. What is the best Volkswagon for this purpose that I can pick up used for $13K or under? My primary concern is fuel mileage as I don't tow a trailer that often.

My bicycle fits in the back of my Golf, and I use a 59cm road frame. I remove the front wheel to do this. If another person rides with me, I'd need to remove both wheels.

Hmm. I can't recommend a VW, only example I've seen is my neighbor who bought a '01 Crown Vic, put a hitch and a few other things on it. He was always hauling stuff on a car trailer with it. Big trunk, V8 for pulling, he boasted of 28 hwy mpg unloaded. You could prob pick up 2 Crown Vics for under 13K.
