Just going by what I've read on this site.

- ALH 2002 is a totally different engine than a BEW(?)2004 so that's not going to work. Edited to add that physically the ALH will fit. It's the electronics and the injection systems that are so different.
- I believe you can put the manual from a 2002 into a 2004 with an automatic but to put the automatic into a manual car is way more work than it's worth.

Hope that answers your questions.

You can legally swap a newer engine in to any vehicle, however, your older engine might not be legal to swap into the newer one. Does your state have emissions?

Your answer is that you need the ECU for the engine itself not the car.

Thanks for the quick response on my first question.
Ok question #2
Will the 5 speed manual trans from the 2004 fit and work properly if installed in my 2002 tdi. I own both cars and I do not have smog issues to worry about.
Thank you
